History Brief
Charlotte County was established April 23, 1921. It was named for the Bay of Charlotte Harbor. "Charlotte" came from "Carlos" (English) or "Calos" (Calusa Indian). In 1565, the Spanish named "Carlos Bay," followed by the English in 1775 who named the area Charlotte Harbor in tribute to the Queen Charlotte Sophia, wife of King George III. Punta Gorda is the only incorporated city in Charlotte County and is the County Seat.

On August 13, 2004 Charlotte County was devastated when Hurricane Charley came ashore near Port Charlotte as a Category 4 hurricane.

Charlotte County is located on the Gulf Coast of Florida, adjacent to Sarasota, Desoto, Highlands, Glades, Hendry and Lee Counties.

Current Projects

South Florida Pioneers full name index

South Florida Pioneers is a collection of newsletters created by Richard M. Livingston and published between 1974 and 1987.  A invaluable resource for those seeking information on the early settlers of Southwest Florida.  A surname index was included with the newsletters, but failed to provide a full given name.  Thus the new project.

For this project we are seeking assistances for the index.  The project is page by page, you can help by doing just a single page, or if you have more time, additional pages.  All work will be online, you will be able to view the page of the newsletter, and transcribe the full name.  Want more information, or to sign up, drop me a message at tom@twparker.com

Once we have the index, it will be presented here and available for download, FREE of charge to anyone wishing to view and access.

As the South Florida Pioneers is a copyrighted work, no access to the collection is provided.  If you are interested in purchasing the collection, please review the DeSoto County Historical Society page
